You might’ve noticed: after chatting about a product, suddenly it pops up as an Instagram ad.
Many assume Instagram listens through your phone’s mic—but that’s not true.
According to Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram, these ads appear because of behavioral prediction algorithms, not voice monitoring.
Mosseri explained that Meta’s advertising system relies on digital behavior signals, not audio recordings.
Instagram analyzes:
This helps the system predict your interests even before you consciously realize them.
For example, if you Google “mirrorless camera” and later talk about it,
Instagram already knows you’re in that interest zone — that’s why camera ads show up.
No one listens to your conversations; it’s just smart AI linking behavior patterns.
Mosseri emphasized that user privacy remains protected.
All data is encrypted and processed automatically — not manually by people.
You can also manage your ad preferences in the Instagram settings to customize your ad experience.
